Culled from Project Newsletter

Under the guidance of ProDiverse's employability skills trainer, Marigold, the extremely keen class - consisting of ladies from Pakistani, Turkey, Somalia, and elsewhere - were eagerly participating in CV creation. Marigold's energetic delivery was a hit with the class who listened in with evident enthusiasm about transferable skills, personal attributes, targeted CV's, word power, and how to write a winning CV.
The class actively shared their personal experiences, exploring the notion of CV creation which was a completely a new concept to them all.
The majority of the class have never been in employment before, and staff found it encouraging to see just how engaged clients were with the prospect of getting into work.
"They all have new-found confidence," said their trainer Marigold, "A lot of them didn't believe they could get a job. There just isn't the information out there to encourage them - this is the first time they have heard about it."
One pupil, Aisha Shaule, from Pakistan, who has been living in the UK for 8 years, said she felt she was "learning so much" and it gave her hope. Her goal is to become a Childcare Assistant and she is taking advantage of the free childcare classes on offer. She has four children and is glad of being afforded such opportunity that she has never had before.
Marigold spoke highly of her class, stating how "hungry for knowledge" they all are. She said: "They are receptive, they want to try new things, and are coming out of their comfort zones. They seem to enjoy it, their vision expands into thinking that they can get a job. It gives them hope."  Article in project newsletter

Eppy thoroughly enjoyed Employment skills training and found it very useful and informative.  The support she gained from the personal advisor and trainer was extremely useful, the staff were always very friendly and helpful which encouraged her in finding a job.  Her personal advisor often spent time together job searching on the internet, using this system Eppy found employment with HSBC Bank.

Initially Eppy's thoughts were that she may not get work in her specific chosen area as she did not have the relevant UK specific experience in this area, but the personal advisor assured her that her educational and career background and her level of English was excellent which made her suitable for a number of the vacancies advertised. With some encouragement and her increased confidence based on the individual one to one support and training on interview techniques, assistance with her CV she received from the ProDiverse staff Ms. Izere secured sustainable employment with HSBC PLC!!!.

Views on POEM/ProDiverse
She thinks that the services provided were good and that she did feel reformatting her CV helped her to get more perspective as to why her job search efforts were not turning into interviews.

She found the people working with the project were friendly and ready and willing to help at any point in time. She found when she interacted with the staff she got a different perspective on why she was failing to secure employment. She was provided with interview skills techniques and was able to pass her interview and secure a job.

Case Study Three:
Pierre Cunsamy

Location: Edmonton
Employed: 24 Feb 2008
Position: Sales Representative
Unemployed: 4-6 months

Previous Work Experience:
Fitness instructor - Fitness First
Sales Representative - Varied

Work Interests:
Pierre wanted to get out of the fitness oriented field of work, but was not sure where exactly he fit; in the world of work. We had an in depth conversation about which jobs he would be most suited for and had settled on customer service / front of house / sales. This would be a field where his professional personal presentation and voice could be of significant advantage.

Current Employment:
Pierre currently works at Space kitchens as a Sales Representative in Southgate but is still interested in acquiring that special position where even more contact with the public is needed.

Source of Registration:
Pierre met one of our outreach personnel in Edmonton and was directed to our Edmonton Centre for registration. Pierre was quite experienced in the world of work and was referred for CV assistance with our job brokerage coordinator as his CV needed only minor adjustments.

Client Views on Project assistance:
Pierre was surprised how minor changes could dramatically alter how his CV represents him. Because he was already quite proactive in seeking work he was excited at the increased possibility of getting interviews out of the many applications he had made - now armed with a new CV and better job focus for vacancies that fit his skills experience and demeanor. He was soon able to secure a job as a sales representative.

Through the child minding course several women are on their way to becoming self-employed.   This month 20 of them have registered with OFSTED and are now officially self-employed.

The clients unlike on any other programme we have delivered , need intensive support in the area of job search , we have literally taken clients to recruitment agencies and to employers, provided assistance with application forms , given them intensive training in interview skills and provided them with CV's. To date 91 of them have secured employment and we hope that this month will see more than 50 securing employment.
